Buying a surfboard

Guides on buying surfboards, have been written in the past. They usually tend to suggest that your board is dependent on your hight weight etc.

I have read guides that try to introduce some kind of exact science to choosing your first board
Something like...You should be exactly one foot shorter than your board or the thickness should be equal to the leangh of your fingers to the second nuckle....Somthing like that.

The truth is that you should buy a board that works for you. You will need to be realistic about your ability. You will also need to think about how often you are going to surf and how good you really want to be.

If you are young. fit, keane, able, confident then you might think about having a few trys on a big board
(surf schools are perfect for this) to find your feet. Then buy somthing like a 6'8'' thruster.

If you are just planning on enjoying the sport on the weekend now and then. You shouldn't feel like you need a shortboard. Buy a mini mal. At the end of the day you will catch more waves, ride the waves for longer and ultimately have more fun on a bigger board.

If you are a larger person, have limited agility or are just finding surfing a little hard starting out, a long board
might suit you well.

Undoubtedley the best kind of board when your starting out is a soft board. Not the kind that is really thick with big square rails but the kind with a soft top, a hard bottom and look like a proper board. They ride pretty much like a proper board, are safe, cheep easy to look after, durable. The perfect way to learn!
