Safety And Etiquette

During your first session(s) with Progress Surf Academy you will not need to be overly concerned with others in the water. This is because we will take such good care of you and will do our best to make sure you are not bothered to much by other water users.

However as your surfing starts to PROGRESS and you become more adventurous, you will have more and more contact with others in the water. These tips have been prepared in order to help you stay safe in the surf and go some way to avoiding being shouted at by irate surfers who may need to chill out.

Provided by the BSA

• Always Consider other water users

• All surfers should be able to swim at least 50 metres in open water.

• Always wear a leash as your board can be a danger to other water users.

• Always return to the beach before dark.

• Never surf under the influence of drugs or alcohol

• Always wear a wetsuit- It keeps you warm and acts as a floatation device

• Always check and maintain your surfing equipment properly, especially your leash

• Know your entry and exit points before entering the water

• Find two reference points to check you position in the water (triangulation)

• Watch the surf for at least ten minutes to asses conditions before entering the water

• Check with lifeguards where to surf.

• Have a surf Buddy, Never surf alone.

Paddling Out

• When paddling out avoid other surfers who are riding waves

• If a collision is about to happen, stop paddling and avoid the rider to avoid you.

• There is no excuse for running someone over

Catching the wave

• Make sure there are no other surfers in front of you while catching the wave.

• Don’t ‘drop in’ on another surfer who is already up and riding

• Communicate, for example calling ‘Left’! Or ‘Right’!

• Keep control of your board at all times

Remember

• You will learn a lot quicker and have a lot more fun by attending lessons at a BSA approved surf school.

• Make sure you are insured for public liability. This insurance is free when you loin the BSA.
